In response to the widespread devastation caused by a hailstorm in Manipur, the State Government has announced a substantial relief package totalling Rs 6.90 crore. This aid, drawn from the State Disaster Relief Fund-SDRF, aims to provide immediate assistance to over 15,400 households grappling with the aftermath of the disaster.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh, in a press briefing, shed light on the severity of the situation, revealing that the hailstorm had wreaked havoc on over 15,425 houses across the State. The government’s commitment to addressing the critical needs of the affected population is highlighted by this comprehensive relief package.
The relief funds will be strategically distributed, with Rs 50 lakh allocated for each of the five valley districts and Rs 40 lakh designated for each of the eleven hill districts impacted. District administrations will oversee the efficient disbursement and utilisation of these funds.
Tragically, the hailstorm and subsequent cyclone resulted in casualties, pressing the urgency of the relief effort. To address immediate needs, the State Government has initiated the distribution of essential commodities and items such as CGI sheets, with deputy commissioners leading coordination efforts in all districts since Sunday.
Specific districts, including Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, Thoubal, and Churachandpur, bore the brunt of the hailstorm’s impact, with residential areas experiencing significant destruction. Preliminary surveys indicate substantial damage, with 5,600 houses affected in Imphal East and 1,179 houses impacted in Bishnupur.
In response to the crisis, the State authorities have established 42 relief camps to provide shelter and aid to those affected by the hailstorm. Ongoing surveys aim to assess the damage to livestock, crops, vegetables, and vehicles, providing crucial information for relief efforts, as confirmed by CM Biren Singh.
