President Droupadi Murmu conferred the esteemed Padma Shri award upon Parbati Barua, recognising her exceptional contributions to elephant conservation and wildlife preservation.
Hailing from Assam’s renowned Gauripur royal lineage, Parbati Barua’s journey to becoming Bharat’s first female elephant mahout and a prominent wildlife advocate epitomises resilience, passion, and an unwavering commitment to her cause. Her extraordinary tale began amidst the lush forests of Kochugaon, where she defied societal norms at the age of 14 to embark on her mission by taming her first elephant, breaking gender barriers along the way.
