Idashisha Nongrang, an esteemed IPS officer, has etched her name in history by becoming the first woman to assume the role of Director General of Police or DGP in Meghalaya. The State Government officially announced her appointment through a notification.
With this milestone, Nongrang has not only broken barriers but also paved the way for gender inclusivity in the top echelons of law enforcement across the Northeastern States.
In response to the announcement, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma expressed, “Heartiest congratulations to Idashisha Nongrang, IPS, on her appointment as the new DGP. Nongrang, a seasoned IPS officer from the 1992 batch, presently serves as the Director General of Civil Defence and Home Guard in Meghalaya. Her wealth of experience and commendable leadership skills position her as an exemplary choice for this prestigious role.
She will succeed Dr LR Bishnoi, the retiring DGP, and will undertake her responsibilities effective from May 20, marking the commencement of her fixed term of two years, until May 19, 2026.
Nongrang’s appointment not only signifies a significant move towards gender parity in law enforcement but also exemplifies the recognition of merit and competence in the highest echelons of public service.
