Amidst eager anticipation, the Assamese feature film ‘Jiya’, directed by Kenny Basumatary and produced by Sarmistha Chakravorty, is gearing up for its theatrical release across Assam on May 17.
‘Jiya’ clinched the prestigious Best Film award at the Prag Cine Awards this year, along with three other accolades for Best Screenplay and Dialogue (Kenny Basumatary & Sarmistha Chakravorty), Best Male Singer (Angarag Papon Mahanta), and Best Background Score (Ambar Das).
Marking Kenny Basumatary’s directorial debut in a ‘serious, but not boring’ cinematic realm, ‘Jiya’ promises an engaging narrative that delves into the journey of resilience embodied by its protagonist, Jiya, portrayed by Sarmistha. Escaping the shackles of an abusive marriage, Jiya embarks on a path fraught with challenges, navigating the complexities of single motherhood alongside her daughter Nupur, played by Aradhya Mahanta.
Amidst societal scrutiny, Jiya finds solace and support in the unwavering friendship of Pallavi, portrayed by Eepsita Hazarika. Venturing into a new phase of her life, Jiya encounters Abhi, portrayed by Reeky Sharma, whose presence in her life unfolds unforeseen twists and turns.
The film’s intriguing trailer, crafted by editor Protim Khaound, offers a glimpse into Jiya’s everyday struggles while showcasing the profound camaraderie between Jiya and Pallavi. Employing Kenny Basumatary’s signature comic flair, the trailer hints at a riveting cinematic experience that seamlessly blends seriousness with entertainment.
“This film resonates with every woman’s journey, depicting their struggles and resilience,” remarked writer, producer, and actor Sarmistha Chakravorty. Director Kenny Basumatary, echoing her sentiments, expressed excitement about the audience’s response upon the film’s release, scheduled for May 17.
With its captivating soundtrack already garnering widespread acclaim, featuring soulful tracks like ‘Xopun Xopun Loga’ by Papon and Sarmistha Chakravorty, and ‘Ei Xadhu’ by Shankuraj Konwar and Sarmistha Chakravorty, ‘Jiya’ promises to captivate audiences with its heartfelt melodies and emotionally resonant storytelling.
