Manipur MLA Leishiyo Keishing has raised concerns about the escalating influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar into Kamjong district and has called upon Chief Minister N Biren Singh to take decisive action to address the issue.
Expressing apprehension over the growing number of illegal immigrants, Keishing has urged the CM to either facilitate the deportation of these individuals back to their home country or provide them with proper shelter under stringent supervision. He highlighted the threat posed by the increasing immigrant population, which has begun to outnumber the local residents, instilling fear among the indigenous populace.
In a letter to the CM, the MLA representing Phungyar Assembly Constituency highlighted the ongoing political turmoil in Myanmar as the catalyst for the continuous influx of illegal immigrants since November 2023. Keishing revealed that the total number of immigrants has surpassed 5,800, with biometric data captured for 5,173 individuals by the Kamjong district administration.
Keishing highlighted the strain on local resources, noting that the number of immigrants residing in shelter homes across various villages has exceeded that of the local populace. He detailed the distribution of immigrants across different shelter homes, asserting on the need for essential provisions and security measures to manage the situation effectively.
Despite efforts to provide basic necessities and accommodations, Keishing lamented incidents of violence and conflicts arising between local residents and immigrants. He highlighted the challenges faced by local law enforcement agencies in maintaining order due to the limited presence of police personnel in the border area.
Additionally, Keishing highlighted the cultural and legal complexities in managing the immigrant population, citing instances where local customary laws failed to address disputes due to differing customs and beliefs.
Addressing concerns over granting Indian citizenship to the refugees, Keishing cautioned against repeating historical mistakes and advocated for strengthening border security measures instead.
The plea from Leishiyo Keishing reflects the urgent need for governmental intervention to mitigate the socio-economic and security challenges posed by the influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar into Manipur’s Kamjong district.
