Assam’s sprinting sensation, Mehedi Hassan, emerged triumphant at the 27th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition held in Odisha, clinching the gold medal in the men’s 1500-meter race.
Clocking an impressive time of 3 minutes and 42.82 seconds, Hassan showcased his exceptional speed and endurance, leaving competitors trailing behind. Abhishek Singh Thakur from Madhya Pradesh secured the second position, while Yoonus Shah from Uttar Pradesh claimed third place.
The prestigious event, organised by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), took place at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar over three action-packed days from May 12 to May 15.
Hassan’s remarkable victory adds another feather to his cap, building upon his bronze medal win in the men’s 1500-meter sprint at the Asian U20 Athletics Championship held in South Korea last year.
Acknowledging his stellar achievement, the Assam Athletics Association (AAA) bestowed honours upon Hassan, with Assam’s Sports Minister Nandita Gorlosa leading the accolades at a ceremony held in Guwahati. Esteemed personalities from the sporting fraternity, including officials from AAA and the Boxing Federation of India, graced the occasion to celebrate Hassan’s success.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Hassan credited his coaches and family for their unwavering support throughout his journey. Despite facing setbacks and injuries along the way, Hassan remained resilient, propelled by the encouragement of his mentors and loved ones.
