Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sharply criticised Congress and the INDIA bloc, accusing them of spreading false narratives about the BJP’s intentions to change the Constitution and eliminate reservations.
Addressing a gathering of intellectuals at the Vishesh Sampark Abhiyan, aimed at countering Opposition propaganda, CM Himanta stated, “We have not tampered with the Constitution in the last 10 years despite having an absolute majority, as it reflects a Hindu civilization that is over 5,000 years old. We have no intention to dilute it.”
CM Himanta emphasised that the BJP’s ideology is aligned with the Constitution, unlike Congress, which he claimed holds an ideology foreign to it. “Whenever the Constitution has been diluted, it has been by Congress. The BJP works within the framework of the Constitution, whereas Congress seeks to promote Sharia law and religion-based reservations,” he asserted.
The Assam Chief Minister highlighted that the members of the Constituent Assembly, which included no representatives from Jan Sangh or RSS, wisely decided against religion-based reservations to prevent further division of the country on religious grounds. He accused Congress of employing a divide-and-rule policy, diluting fundamental principles and laws to weaken the nation by dividing its people.
CM Himanta pointed out that the term “secularism” was not originally part of the Constitution. “Congress, which always talks about secularism, incorporated it in 1975 during the Emergency under a dictatorial regime,” he said.
In his speech, the Assam CM argued that Bharat’s secular character is rooted in its civilisational history, not in the narratives created by Congress or left liberals. He insisted that the BJP respects and adheres to the Constitution, which he believes embodies the values of Bharat’s ancient civilization.
