The refugee crisis in Mizoram has intensified with the arrival of 65 more individuals from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts. This latest group entered Lawngtlai district in southern Mizoram on Sunday, increasing the total number of refugees to 1,433.
According to officials in Lawngtlai, the new arrivals reached Vathuampui village around 3 am after briefly halting in the nearby Mautlang village. The group includes 38 males and 27 females, comprising children, elderly, and ailing individuals.
Villagers in Vathuampui quickly informed the district administration about the new arrivals.
The previous influx occurred on May 10, when 127 refugees entered Mizoram and were accommodated in six villages: Khawmawi, Hruitezawl, Hmawngbu, Bungtlang South, Vathuampui, and Chamdur ‘P’. Among the 65 new entrants, some have joined the existing groups in Khawmawi, Hruitezawl, Hmawngbu, Bungtlang South, and Vathuampui, while the rest are taking shelter in the community hall of Chamdur ‘P’ village.
An official noted, “The villagers have been very cooperative, providing initial support and informing us promptly about the new arrivals.”
