Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma strongly criticised the practice of polygamy, stating that he would never allow his daughter to marry a man with multiple wives. His remarks came during a campaign event in West Bengal.
CM Himanta recounted a conversation with a Muslim woman, who expressed her distress over her husband’s decision to marry another woman after ten years of marriage. He shared similar stories of women suffering due to polygamy, highlighting the emotional toll it takes on Muslim women. “Muslim mothers and sisters cry, and divorce their husbands to escape the plight of polygamy,” mentioned the Assam CM in his speech.

Accentuating Bharat’s secular nature, he called for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code or UCC, also known as Common Civil Code, to prevent Muslim men from engaging in polygamy. He urged the public to support the Bharatiya Janata Party and criticised West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) for not addressing this issue.
Earlier in May, the Assam Government, led by Himanta Biswa Sarma, established a committee to review the legal implications of banning polygamy. This initiative followed controversial remarks by BJP MPs, including Sakshi Maharaj, advocating for the prohibition of polygamy within Islam.
