The Dalai Lama, the revered Tibetan spiritual leader, extended his heartfelt congratulations to Lai Ching-te, who was sworn in as Taiwan’s new president on May 20.
In a message celebrating Taiwan’s democratic evolution, the Dalai Lama wrote, “It is wonderful to see how firmly rooted democracy has become in Taiwan. The Taiwanese people have not only developed a flourishing, robust democracy but have also achieved great prosperity while preserving their rich cultural traditions.”
The Dalai Lama expressed his best wishes for President Lai’s success, emphasising, “May I wish you every success in meeting the challenges that lie ahead in fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of the people of Taiwan.”
Lai Ching-te assumed the presidency amid increasing military pressure from China and a contentious domestic political environment. China, which considers Taiwan a part of its territory, has labelled the 64-year-old Lai as a “dangerous separatist”. Additionally, China warned that his leadership could lead to “war and decline” for the island.
Lai follows President Tsai Ing-wen, whose two terms in office were marked by heightened tensions with Beijing due to her firm stance against China’s territorial claims over Taiwan. Despite the strained relations, Taiwan has continued to thrive economically and maintain its democratic values.
The Dalai Lama’s message highlights the significance of Taiwan’s democratic resilience and cultural preservation in the face of external pressures. As Lai Ching-te steps into his new role, the international community him watches closely, hopeful for continued peace and prosperity for the people of Taiwan.
