Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has called for an urgent assessment of the “diarrhoea-like illness” outbreak that has claimed 11 lives in the Tongona Tea Estate in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district.
Sonowal expressed profound concern over the outbreak, which has resulted in multiple fatalities. Recognising the severity of the situation, he communicated directly with Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota and Tinsukia District Commissioner Swapnil Pal to evaluate the situation and ensure immediate assistance.
Expressing his heartfelt condolences, Sonowal extended prayers for the departed souls and offered his deepest sympathies to the affected families. He asserted on the need for prompt action, directing the authorities to implement adequate measures to safeguard the health and well-being of the Tongona Tea Estate residents.
“Panic had gripped the residents of the tea estate. Earlier, a diarrhoea outbreak in a tea estate in neighbouring Dibrugarh district had claimed two lives and infected many others.”
Sonowal’s proactive approach aims to mitigate the impact of the outbreak and prevent further loss of life. The directive highlights the importance of rapid response and effective management in such public health emergencies.
