Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has launched a vigorous campaign against drug trafficking, pledging to eliminate the menace that endangers the State’s youth. In a statement shared on his X account, the CM outlined the government’s unwavering commitment to dismantling the networks of contraband substances that have plagued society.
CM Himanta wrote, “Assam’s War on Drugs is our persistent effort to eliminate the nexus of contraband substances which is ruining the lives of our youth. We will NEVER ALLOW further ruining of our society and will continue to strike a DEADLY BLOW to these anti- social forces, wherein we have seized substances worth over ₹2,166cr since we assumed office.”

His declaration comes on the heels of significant progress made in the State’s ongoing “War on Drugs” initiative. Since assuming office on May 10, 2021, through May 15, 2024, authorities have registered 8,855 cases related to drug offences. During this period, an impressive total of 14,593 individuals have been arrested for their involvement in drug-related activities.
Law enforcement agencies have made substantial seizures, confiscating 432 kg of heroin, 105,567 kg of cannabis, 453 kg of opium, and 1,100,858 bottles of codeine cough syrup. Additionally, they have seized a staggering 123,512,298 tablets and capsules of various illicit substances.
Other notable confiscations include 3,318 kg of poppy straw, ₹55,184,175 in cash, 28,865 units of foreign currency, 206,400 counterfeit Indian currency notes, 2 kg of morphine, 24 kg of crystal methamphetamine, and 1 kg of cocaine.
The estimated market value of the confiscated substances stands at an astounding ₹2,166.30 crore, highlighting the extensive scale of the drug trade in the region.
CM Himanta’s announcement highlights the State Government’s determination to combat drug trafficking and protect its citizens, especially the youth, from the devastating effects of substance abuse. The aggressive measures undertaken so far reflect a resolute commitment to eradicating the scourge of drugs and ensuring the well-being of Assam’s residents.
