Continuous rainfall over the past two days has severely disrupted life in Manipur, causing flash floods, mudslides, and landslides across the State.
The lack of an adequate drainage system has led to flash floods in many valley areas. The situation worsened when major rivers like the Imphal and Nambul Rivers breached their banks due to relentless rainfall.
The overflowing rivers have flooded roads, homes, and government offices, submerging much of the valley regions. In Imphal East district, the Imphal River overflowed near the Lamlong Bridge, flooding areas such as Khurai, Soibam Leikai, and Porompat. Lamlong Keithel was inundated, and floodwaters flowed over the Lamlong-Pangei road.
Further flooding occurred in Heingang, Hatta Golapati Maning Leikai, and near Kekrupat, with water extending to North AOC and the Khoyathong traffic point. Areas including Sagolband, Kakwa, Thangmeiband, Kwakeithel, and Uripok also faced significant flooding. The Irang Bailey Bridge on the Imphal-Jiribam highway collapsed around 4:30 pm yesterday, stranding numerous trucks heading toward Imphal.
Landslides and mudslides along the Imphal-Jiribam and Imphal-Dimapur highways caused further disruptions. In Ukhrul district, landslides on the Imphal-Ukhrul road left many passenger vehicles stranded for hours. A mudslide at Sinam Village on the Imphal-Jiribam road swept a truck into a gorge, though no casualties have been reported so far.
Similar conditions are affecting many areas in the hill district. In response, the government has issued advisories and closed schools until May 31 to ensure the safety of residents amid the ongoing severe weather.
