Manipur is witnessing a concerted flood relief operation led by the Loktak Development Authority or LDA, with Chief Minister N Biren Singh actively overseeing the efforts.
Under the leadership of LDA Chairman M Asnikumar Singh Moira and Project Director Bhagaton, the LDA has been working in tandem with the Chief Secretary, district administration, and other stakeholders to alleviate the impact of the recent floods.
A crucial element of the relief efforts involves a partnership with the Thanga fishing community. This collaboration has mobilised three teams of fishermen from Thanga, who, equipped with boats, are assisting in the rescue of individuals stranded in severely flooded areas of Imphal.
These combined efforts have successfully rescued over 800 people, and the teams continue their vital work. Additionally, the LDA is closely monitoring low-lying areas around Loktak Lake to manage and prevent further flood risks.
The LDA extends its sincere gratitude to all participants in these critical relief operations, especially highlighting the significant contributions of the Thanga fishermen.
Despite these efforts, the severe weather has led to several tragic incidents. In Senapati district, a 34-year-old man lost his life, and three others were injured in a landslide on Thonglang road. An 83-year-old woman drowned in the overflowing Senapati River, and a 75-year-old man in Imphal was fatally electrocuted after accidentally touching an electric pole during the rain.
The overflowing Imphal River has caused widespread flooding, affecting hundreds of households in the Imphal Valley. In Imphal West district, at least 86 areas, including Khuman Lampak, Nagaram, Sagolband, Uripok, Keisamthong, and Paona, have been inundated due to the Nambul River breaching its banks.
In Imphal East district, heavy rainfall caused the Imphal River to breach its banks near Keirang, Khaban, and Lairiyenbam Leikei, resulting in extensive flooding and damage to numerous homes.
