The delimitation process for village panchayats, anchalik panchayats, and zilla parishads will be completed by August, stated Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu. The decision, taken during a recent Cabinet meeting, aims to ensure that elections for the rural bodies can be held by the end of 2024.
“This move follows a similar process undertaken for the Lok Sabha and Assembly constituencies last year,” Pegu noted.
He added, “To rationalise resource utilisation and strengthen democratic representation at the grassroots, the Cabinet has approved the proposal for reorganising development blocks and delimiting village panchayats, anchalik panchayats, and zilla parishads in Assam.”
The interim delimitation exercise in Assam, conducted just before New Year 2023, aimed to ensure equitable representation and was seen by many as a strategic move to secure political dominance for Assamese-speaking and indigenous groups.
