Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the national celebrations from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The event took place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) alongside Dal Lake, marking Modi’s first visit to the region since beginning his third consecutive term in office.
This year’s theme, “Yoga for Self and Society,” highlights yoga’s role in enhancing individual well-being and promoting community health. Since its inception in 2014, International Yoga Day has been commemorated at various iconic locations worldwide, including Kartavya Path in Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Lucknow, Mysuru, and the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The SKICC event aims to encourage widespread participation and underscore yoga’s benefits in rural areas.
Established by the United Nations in December 2014 following PM Modi’s proposal at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), International Yoga Day is observed annually on June 21st.
