Former cricketer Gautam Gambhir has addressed speculation about his potential appointment as the next head coach of the Indian cricket team following Rahul Dravid’s tenure. Speaking at an Indian Chamber of Commerce event, Gambhir emphasised his coaching philosophy centred around putting the team first.
During a virtual interview with the BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, Gambhir remained cautious about discussing his future plans, stating, “I don’t see that far ahead. You are grilling me, asking me all tough questions.”
Reflecting on his recent success as team mentor with KKR in the IPL, Gambhir stressed the importance of team cohesion over individual performances. “My job is not to make individuals perform. My job, as a mentor, is to make KKR win,” he asserted.
Gambhir highlighted his belief in equality within a team, stating, “In a team sport, it’s the team that matters the most. Individuals do play a role, but if 11 people are treated equally, given the same respect, you will achieve an unbelievable amount of success.”
The former cricketer, who captained India in several matches, expressed satisfaction with his contributions. However, he expressed one regret about not finishing the 2011 World Cup final, where he scored 97 runs before Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s decisive innings.
Gambhir’s insights into coaching and leadership highlight his readiness to take on significant roles in cricket administration, amidst ongoing speculation about his future in coaching.
