Meghalaya’s Umiam is set to undergo a significant transformation into a premier tourist destination, with the State’s Forest department allocating over 300 acres of land, announced Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh.
Following a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on June 20, Minister Lyngdoh outlined plans for Umiam’s transformation, accentuating its potential as a key attraction in the Northeast region.
“The Meghalaya Government aims to revitalise Umiam into a prominent tourist spot. The Forest department’s allocation of 300 acres marks substantial progress towards achieving this goal,” Lyngdoh stated, addressing reporters.
He elaborated that the initiative includes enhancing infrastructure such as accommodations, entertainment zones, and expanding facilities under the Meghalaya Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).
Additionally, the project aims to introduce water sports and other recreational activities, highlighting efforts to enhance Umiam’s appeal to visitors.
The State Government will proceed with finalising detailed plans to advance Umiam’s development as a pivotal tourism hub in the Northeast.
