United Nations General Assembly President Dennis Francis delivered a poignant message on Friday, extolling yoga as more than just a physical discipline but a profound metaphor for global unity. His remarks came during the 10th International Day of Yoga celebrations held at the UN Headquarters.
Francis asserted, “Yoga is a powerful metaphor for the United Nations itself. Just as yoga integrates various dimensions of the human experience into a harmonious whole, the UN unites diverse nations and cultures to collaborate towards shared objectives.”
Highlighting the theme “Yoga for Self and Society,” Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed highlighted yoga’s capacity to strengthen unity across borders and cultures. She reflected on last year’s record-breaking event where people from diverse nationalities participated in yoga together, accentuating yoga’s universal appeal and ability to connect people through shared values.
In a written message, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appreciated yoga’s role in enhancing personal well-being and promoting community harmony. He noted its global embrace by people of all backgrounds, crediting yoga’s principles of balance, mindfulness, and peace for enhancing a deeper connection between humanity and the planet.
Amidst a vibrant celebration on the UN Headquarters North Lawn, diplomats, UN staff, and members of the Indian diaspora joined in mass yoga exercises. Participants donned white and blue T-shirts adorned with the Yoga Day logo, embodying the spirit of unity and wellness.
Denise Scotto, Chair of the UN’s International Day of Yoga Committee, highlighted the global support for the initiative, with 177 countries co-sponsoring the 2014 General Assembly resolution that designated June 21 as International Day of Yoga. She described this widespread participation as a testament to global unity and solidarity.
The event featured cultural performances including Rabindranath Tagore’s “Streams of Light” performed by the UN Chamber Music Society and classical dances by the Indian Raga dance troupe, integrating yoga postures into their performances.
As the celebration concluded, attendees reflected on yoga’s enduring message of unity, peace, and holistic well-being, resonating deeply within the halls of the United Nations.
