The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with over 3.90 lakh people still affected, despite a slight improvement due to receding rainfall in some areas, officials reported on Saturday.
At least 19 districts continue to face severe flooding, impacting a wide swath of the population. This year’s floods, landslides, and storms have claimed 37 lives so far, with one person reported missing.
The flood-affected districts include Kamrup, Tamulpur, Hailakandi, Udalguri, Hojai, Dhubri, Barpeta, Biswanath, Nalbari, Bongaigaon, Baksa, Karimganj, South Salmara, Goalpara, Darrang, Bajali, Nagaon, Cachar, and Kamrup Metropolitan as of Friday.
Karimganj remains the worst-hit district, with over 2.40 lakh people affected. The overall number of affected individuals has slightly decreased from 4.09 lakh on Thursday, although the number of districts impacted remains unchanged.
Major rivers, such as Kopili at Kampur and Dharamtul, Barak at BP Ghat, and Kushiyara in Karimganj, continue to flow above danger levels, exacerbating the situation.
In response, more than 100 relief camps have been established, providing shelter to over 15,000 people. Additionally, 125 relief distribution centres are operational to aid those in need.
Infrastructure damage across various districts includes houses, cattle sheds, roads, bridges, and embankments. The authorities are working tirelessly to address the damages and provide necessary relief to the affected communities.
