Sony Pictures Networks India has named Gaurav Banerjee as its incoming Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective on or before August 26. Banerjee, taking over from NP Singh following his distinguished 25-year tenure, brings extensive experience from his leadership roles at Disney Star.
Banerjee’s career spans significant leadership in content strategy for Hindi entertainment and Disney+ Hotstar, along with overseeing Star Bharat, Hindi and English movies, kids and infotainment, and regional (east) content. His expertise includes spearheading original series and films across multiple languages.
Beginning his media career as a journalist, Banerjee’s journey includes roles as an assistant producer and anchor at Aaj Tak, followed by tenure at Star News, where he produced and anchored prime-time news shows. He holds a Master’s degree in filmmaking and TV production from Jamia Millia Islamia University and an undergraduate degree in history from St Stephens, Delhi.

NP Singh, transitioning to the role of non-executive chairman until the fiscal year-end, expressed confidence in Banerjee’s leadership, highlighting his potential to elevate SPNI’s portfolio. Banerjee’s pivotal role in revitalising Star Plus with iconic shows such as Diya Aur Baati Hum and Sasural Genda Phool highlights his impact in content strategy and audience engagement. His appointment marks a new chapter for SPNI, set for further growth under his leadership.
