In a thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 encounter, India emerged victorious against Australia by 24 runs in the Super Eights match on Monday, with Axar Patel earning the ‘Fielder of the Match’ medal for his exceptional fielding performance.
During the ninth over of Australia’s innings, Patel executed a spectacular catch to dismiss Mitchell Marsh, using his non-dominant right hand. Kuldeep Yadav bowled a length ball to the pads, which Marsh pulled behind square. Patel’s flawless catch at a crucial moment helped India seize control of the game.
India’s fielding coach, T Dilip, praised the team’s fielding efforts during the medal presentation, highlighting their determination and adaptability. “Phenomenal effort, boys. Everyone, well done. In the Caribbean, fielding tests our mettle, but we covered every gap from boundary to infield. The masterpiece was our commitment to every catch, showing we are here to dominate,” he said.
The match began with Australia winning the toss and opting to bowl. India’s skipper, Rohit Sharma, played an extraordinary innings, scoring 92 runs off 41 balls, including 7 fours and 8 sixes, at a strike rate of 224.39. Supported by Suryakumar Yadav (31 off 16) and Hardik Pandya (27* off 17), India posted a formidable total of 205/5.
Australia’s bowling was spearheaded by Mitchell Starc and Marcus Stoinis, who each took two wickets in their spells.
In their chase, Australia saw a powerful knock from Travis Head, who scored 76 runs off 43 balls with 9 fours and 4 sixes. However, his dismissal by Jasprit Bumrah in the 17th over proved pivotal. Mitchell Marsh contributed 37 runs off 28 balls but couldn’t lead Australia to victory.
Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler for India, taking three wickets in his four-over spell, playing a key role in restricting Australia to 181/8.
Rohit Sharma was named Player of the Match for his captain’s knock that set up India’s imposing total. This victory strengthens India’s position in the Super Eights, with the team’s fielding and bowling performances underpinning their success.
