The Central Government has extended the tenure of Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Tapan Kumar Deka by one year, continuing his term until June 2025. This decision, announced on June 24, highlights Deka’s significant contributions and effective leadership in the IB.
Tapan Kumar Deka, a 1998-batch Indian Police Service officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has held the position of IB director and earned recognition for his outstanding performance over the past two years. His tenure extension aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s strategy to retain key security team members, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, following Modi’s historic third term in office.
Deka has spent the majority of his career with the IB, initially serving as an Additional Director and later being promoted to Special Director in June of the previous year. His expertise in counter-terrorism has been critical in several high-profile operations and initiatives.
Notably, Deka played a crucial role in dismantling the Indian Mujahideen’s terror network and was instrumental during significant incidents such as the 2015-16 Pathankot air base attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack. His efforts in managing terrorism-related cases in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly addressing targeted killings in the Valley, have been commendable.
The extension of Tapan Kumar Deka’s tenure is viewed as a strategic decision to maintain continuity and stability within Bharat’s intelligence framework amidst ongoing security challenges. His leadership is expected to strengthen the country’s intelligence operations and counter-terrorism efforts in the coming year.
