The flood situation in Assam has shown signs of improvement as the water levels of major rivers have begun to recede, thanks to a reduction in rainfall. However, despite this positive development, approximately 1.7 lakh people continue to be affected, according to the latest bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
The ASDMA reported that 1,70,377 individuals are currently impacted by the floods across nine districts: Bajali, Barpeta, Cachar, Darrang, Goalpara, Kamrup, Karimganj, Nagaon, and Hojai. This number marks a decrease from over two lakh people who were affected in these districts on Sunday.
Unfortunately, the toll from this year’s floods, landslides, and storms has risen to 40, with a recent drowning incident in Cachar adding to the fatalities.
Karimganj remains the hardest-hit district, with 96,440 people affected by the floodwaters. Cachar follows with over 52,400 affected residents, and Darrang has nearly 10,802 people impacted.
The Kushiara River in Karimganj is still flowing above the danger mark, but other major rivers and their tributaries are showing a declining trend, which is a relief to the beleaguered region.
Currently, 13,094 people are taking refuge in 149 relief camps set up in the affected areas. The floods have inundated 641 villages and damaged 2,273.44 hectares of crop land across the State. Additionally, embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure have sustained significant damage due to the floodwaters.
As the floodwaters recede, authorities and residents hope for a swift recovery and a return to normalcy in the affected regions.
