The National Investigation Agency or NIA has filed charges against four individuals, including a member of the Myanmar-based banned terrorist organisation ULFA-I, for their involvement in a conspiracy targeting Army camps in Assam. The plot, orchestrated by ULFA-I’s leadership across the border, aimed at destabilising security in the Northeastern State.
According to NIA statements, two motorcyclists affiliated with ULFA-I threw grenades at the military station in Lichubari, Jorhat district, on December 14. This incident formed part of a broader scheme to assault multiple army installations across Assam, following a similar attack in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district, just weeks earlier.
ULFA-I, through a press release on December 15, claimed responsibility for these assaults. The NIA identified the masterminds behind these operations as ULFA-I’s self-styled captain Abhijeet Gogoi alias Kanak Gogoi alias Rumel Asom alias Aicheng Asom alias Aishang Asom, alongside the group’s chief Paresh Baruah alias Paresh Asom. Additionally, ULFA-I’s SS Brigadier Arunudoy Dohutia alias Arunodoi Asom was named as a key conspirator.
The investigation into the Jorhat incident led to the arrest and subsequent charging of Biplab Baruah, Biraj Kachari, and Achyut Gogoi. They were charged in a special NIA court in Guwahati, alongside SS Captain Aicheng Asom, who remains at large. The NIA emphasised the transnational coordination involved in planning these attacks, highlighting the cross-border threat posed by ULFA-I to Bharat’s security.
