After the conclusion of the Ambubachi Mela, the renowned Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati reopened its doors to a surge of devotees flocking to the sacred seat of the Shakti cult during early morning on Wednesday.
For four days, the temple had remained closed symbolically, as per tradition marking Goddess Kamakhya’s annual menstrual cycle. Rituals marking the temple’s reopening were conducted on the night of Wednesday, paving the way for devotees to visit from Thursday, according to an official from the Kamakhya Devalaya.
The Ambubachi Mela, which began on June 22, witnessed robust security measures and drew over 25 lakh visitors during its duration, making it a significant event on Assam’s tourism calendar.
To accommodate pilgrims, the administration provided camp facilities for thousands at Kamakhya railway station and Pandu port along River Brahmaputra. Comprehensive security arrangements, involving police personnel, volunteers, and private security guards, ensured a safe environment throughout the Mela.
The Ambubachi festival, steeped in cultural significance, also honours the belief that Mother Earth undergoes her own cycle of menstruation during this period.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a video on X and wrote, “As the doors of Devi Kamakhya opens following the conclusion of the annual Ambubachi Mela, I pray to Maa for the continued growth and prosperity of Bharat. My compliments to everyone involved in successfully and peacefully organising this grand celebration of devotion.”
