Leki Zangmu, the mother of Chief Minister Pema Khandu, peacefully passed away at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun, following a prolonged illness on June 26. She was approximately 75 years old.
Born in 1950 to late Sangey Norbu and late Sangey Tosumu at Dharamkang village near Tawang, Leki Zangmu was the youngest of 13 children. Her father, a respected traditional architect, contributed to the art and design of various Monpa houses and monasteries in the Tawang region. In her youth, she worked as a labourer with GREF and BRO, earning Rs 30 per month.
She is survived by two sons, eight grandchildren, and two daughters-in-law. Her husband, late Chief Minister Dorjee Khandu, passed away in 2011.
Arunachal Pradesh Governor KT Parnaik expressed his condolences, describing Leki Zangmu as a remarkable woman. He joined the people of Arunachal Pradesh in praying for her eternal peace and offering strength to the grieving family.
Press bodies, including the Arunachal Press Club (APC) and the Arunachal Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ), also mourned her passing, extending their sympathies to CM Khandu and his family during this difficult time.
The Arunachal Electronic & Digital Media Association (AEDMA) paid tribute to Leki Zangmu’s unwavering support for her family, particularly her encouragement to CM Pema Khandu. They noted her gentle nature and compassionate spirit, which endeared her to many.
State Assembly Speaker Tesam Pongte and the Arunachal Indigenous Tribes Forum also conveyed their deep sadness and offered prayers for strength to the bereaved family during this period of loss.
