Afghanistan, having reached the T20 World Cup 2024 semi-finals on the back of a strong campaign, suffered a dramatic collapse, managing only 56 runs against South Africa. This total stands as the lowest ever in a T20 World Cup semi-final and marks a nadir in Afghanistan’s T20 International history. Former England captain Michael Vaughan attributed this debacle to what he called the ‘India factor’.
Vaughan took to social media to criticise the scheduling of the semi-finals, suggesting that Afghanistan’s journey from St Vincent to Trinidad left them with insufficient time to prepare adequately for the crucial match against South Africa.
“So Afghanistan qualify for the WC semi winning in St Vincent on Monday night… 4 hours’ flight delay on Tuesday to Trinidad so no time to practice or get accustomed to a new venue… utter lack of respect to players I am afraid…,” he expressed.
Responding to a fan’s reminder that Afghanistan had previous experience at the venue, Vaughan acknowledged, “I know but it’s still a different venue… you surely earn the right in a semi final to have at least 1 days’ preparation…”
Vaughan further criticised the decision to stage the semi-final in Trinidad instead of Guyana, implying it was influenced by favouritism towards India’s interests.
“Surely this Semi should have been the Guyana one… but because the whole event is geared towards India it’s so unfair on others…,” he asserted.
Afghanistan’s defeat by 9 wickets against South Africa saw the Proteas securing their maiden T20 World Cup final appearance. Meanwhile, the Indian team is slated to face England in the second semi-final on June 27.
