Bharat has strongly criticised Pakistan for its “baseless and politically motivated remarks” concerning Jammu and Kashmir during a debate on Children and Armed Conflict at the United Nations Security Council. R Ravindra, Bharat’s Deputy Representative to the UN, denounced Pakistan’s statements as a habitual attempt to divert attention from serious violations against children within Pakistan.
Addressing the debate, Ravindra asserted that the Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral and inalienable parts of Bharat. He rebutted Pakistan’s claims with firm condemnation, stating, “Let me respond briefly to remarks that were clearly politically motivated and unfounded, made by a representative against my country. I dismiss and condemn these baseless remarks with the contempt they deserve.”
Highlighting the importance of preventing violations against children in armed conflict, Ravindra noted, “This year marks 25 years since the adoption of Security Council Resolution 1261 on children and armed conflict. The annual debate has consistently highlighted the challenges faced by children and asserted on the need for international action.”
He highlighted the role of national governments in protecting children’s rights and called for greater focus on combating abuse, exploitation, and sexual violence committed by terrorist groups. Ravindra stressed the need for inclusive approaches to protect child victims and support their reintegration into society.
Concluding his remarks, Ravindra reaffirmed Bharat’s commitment to supporting the UN’s efforts in safeguarding children in conflict zones, stating, “The right to a joyful childhood leading to a life full of opportunities is fundamental. Bharat stands firm in its commitment to collaborate with the UN to protect children affected by armed conflict.”
