Forest & Environment Department Minister and Dzongu Area MLA Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, alongside Land Revenue & Disaster Management Secretary and Relief Commissioner Namrata Thapa, conducted a thorough survey in the disaster-stricken areas of Phidang, Hee Gyathang, Sangklang, and Mangshila.
The team, including local administrators such as SDM Kabi, SDM Dzongu, BDO Dzongu, DFO(T), ACF, and RO Forest, along with police and forest department officials, evaluated critical infrastructure and community needs across several sites.
During the inspection, significant challenges and community concerns were uncovered. The newly-constructed Bailey Suspension Bridge, spanning 320 feet, was assessed by the Chief Engineer of GREF, who confirmed its stable weight capacity of 20-22 tons. However, locals raised concerns about area instability and requested infrastructure enhancements, including a retaining wall near the riverbank.
Traveling from Phidang to Hee Gyathang, the team utilised a new Bailey bridge built by Army Engineers, noting its 40-ton load capacity.
The team visited landslide sites in Gnon and Sudhur wards, where extensive damage to land and infrastructure was observed. While immediate relief efforts had restored essential pathways, the need for permanent solutions, including potential relocation due to unstable conditions, was emphasised.
Officials noted infrastructure damage and discussed relocation needs for affected residents, highlighting accessibility challenges to schools.
Discussions with local authorities revealed the widespread impact of the disaster, underscoring the necessity for coordinated relief efforts.
Reflecting on the survey, Minister Pintso stressed the urgency of sustainable solutions to mitigate recurring disasters. Secretary Thapa commended local initiatives, such as the construction of a zip line and cane bridge by residents, showcasing community resilience amidst adversity.
