Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed concerns regarding recent disturbances following the Lok Sabha election results on June 4. He asserted a segment of individuals is actively disrupting peace in the state through serious criminal activities and directed law enforcement to respond decisively.
During a media briefing after a cabinet session in Nalbari, Himanta Sarma remarked, “We have observed attempts to destabilise Assam, which has enjoyed three years of relative peace.”
His comments follow Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika’s observations in a June 26 Facebook post, highlighting multiple incidents occurring in Assam post-election, which he suggested might be linked to individuals from specific communities.
In response, the CM outlined several notable incidents, including recent cases of rape in Mazbat, Dhekiajuli, and Dudhnoi, as well as instances of mob violence in villages across Barpeta and Kokrajhar.
“While such criminal activities had significantly decreased over the past three years, we have seen an alarming rise in incidents over the past month,” CM Himanta added during the briefing.
