In response to recent violence and displacement affecting the Hmar community in Manipur’s Jiribam town and surrounding villages, the apex body of the Hmar tribe, Hmar Inpui, issued a press communique. The statement expressed grave concerns over armed miscreants causing turmoil, forcing hundreds of Hmar people to flee their homes.
According to the Hmar Inpui, the displaced population is enduring severe hardships and faces an uncertain future as their homes and properties are being systematically looted and destroyed. They urgently called upon the district administration and law enforcement agencies to take immediate action against the militant groups responsible for the violence. The Hmar Inpui demanded the removal and arrest of these groups to ensure the safety of abandoned properties and resources in Jiribam.
Additionally, the statement highlighted the Hmar community’s opposition to the stationing of State police forces in Hmar-inhabited areas, particularly highlighting concerns stemming from ongoing conflicts in Manipur. Specifically, they oppose any initiative to deploy State police in Borobekra. Asserting their indigenous status, the Hmar community reaffirms their historical presence in Jiribam District, dating back to the pre-independence era.
