Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has dismissed any speculation about family discord regarding the selection of a candidate for the upcoming Gambegre bypolls. He assured the decision process within his family and the National People’s Party has been smooth and united.
The clarification from CM Sangma comes amid reports suggesting that his wife, Mehtab Chandee, is a leading contender for the critical bypolls. Media reports indicated CM Sangma’s brother, James PK Sangma, is in contention for the party ticket, potentially causing friction if Chandee were to be chosen.
The party shortlisted name of four candidates for the bypolls on June 27. One of them will be finalised as the party’s candidate in the coming week. Party members recently held a meeting to discuss these potential candidates, and the final contender’s name is expected to be announced soon.
Following a significant setback in the recent Lok Sabha elections, the NPP is diligently preparing for the Gambegre bypolls. The party’s leadership is thoroughly evaluating the shortlisted candidates to ensure a strong contender is selected.
Reports suggest that the ruling Meghalaya party initially considered more than 10 potential candidates, including CM Sangma’s wife Mehtab Chandee, his sister Agatha Sangma, and his brother James PK Sangma, for the bypolls.
