In a startling revelation, authorities at Gauhati University have apprehended nine individuals implicated in a massive marksheet scam. The scam involved illicitly increasing marks on student records through financial transactions.
Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed the issue in Barpeta, highlighting its severity. Assam Police and the CID are conducting a joint investigation, resulting in the arrest of eight suspects thus far.
The scam surfaced when Ganeshlal Choudhury College officials in Barpeta Road detected discrepancies in the marks of Azizul Haque, a sixth-year undergraduate. Although initial investigations were reportedly inadequate, prompting Haque’s release, media reports alerted the Chief Minister to procedural lapses.
CM Himanta subsequently ordered a thorough probe, revealing involvement by university and college staff in fraudulent activities. Among those arrested are Krishnan Krishnamurthy from Samastipur, Bihar, employed at Gauhati University, and Shivtosh Mahto, a junior computer assistant at Dhubri Law College. Coordinated raids by Barpeta and Dhubri police led to these arrests.
The apprehended individuals include Azizul Haque; Krishnan Krishnamurthy; Ismail Hussain and Alamgir Khan from Kalgachia; Moinul Haque from Bordanga; Hamez Uddin from Nagaon; Aminul Islam, librarian at Langla College; Shivtosh Mahto; and Abul Bacher from Langla Kalgachia.
Legal actions under various sections of the IPC have been initiated, with ongoing investigations suggesting additional arrests. As the case unfolds, it raises significant concerns about academic integrity and exam system security at Gauhati University.
