Today, Assam marks a significant transformation in its criminal justice system with the implementation of three new criminal codes, replacing the British-era laws, including the Indian Penal Code. Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted these reforms prioritise the safety of women, children, and the underprivileged by leveraging modern technology and citizen-centric services.
“This is a watershed moment for Bharat’s criminal justice system. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam have come into effect, replacing 164-year-old colonial laws,” announced CM Himanta on X.

He acknowledged the extensive efforts of Team Assam over the past months to prepare for the effective implementation of these forward-looking laws. The CM called on all stakeholders, including police, civil servants, citizens, lawyers, civil society, and the judiciary, to collaborate for the successful enforcement of these laws.
“I earnestly appeal to all stakeholders to work together with us to realise the core objectives of these laws,” urged CM Himanta.
The new legislation aims to streamline legal processes, enhance safety measures, and integrate technological advancements to ensure efficient justice delivery across Assam. These reforms are expected to significantly improve the State’s ability to address societal challenges and protect the rights of its citizens.
The implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam promises to reshape Assam’s legal landscape, creating a more responsive and inclusive justice system for the future.
