India’s long wait for an ICC title finally ended as the team, led by Rohit Sharma and powered by Virat Kohli, secured a thrilling seven-run victory over South Africa in the T20 World Cup final on Saturday. Held at Kensington Oval in Barbados, India posted a competitive 176 for 7 after winning the toss and opting to bat. South Africa, in their chase, fell short, finishing at 169 for 8.
As the champions of the 2024 T20 World Cup, India was awarded $2.45 million (approximately INR 20.42 crore) by the International Cricket Council (ICC). South Africa, the runners-up, received $1.28 million (approximately INR 10.67 crore).
England and Afghanistan, the two teams knocked out in the semi-finals by India and South Africa respectively, each received $787,500 (approximately INR 6.56 crore).
The match saw intense moments, especially when Heinrich Klaasen scored a rapid 52 off 27 balls, challenging India’s spinners. However, India managed to claw back into the game with crucial performances from their bowlers.
Hardik Pandya, facing criticism over the past six months, successfully defended 16 runs in the final over, securing India’s first ICC trophy since 2013 and their second T20 World Cup title.
The victory brought immense joy and relief to the Indian team, particularly to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The win was also a fitting farewell to head coach Rahul Dravid. Kohli’s 76 off 59 balls, combined with Axar Patel’s 47 off 31, helped India set the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final.
