Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to discuss the severe flood situation in the State, pledging the Central Government’s full support.
CM Himanta, in a social media post, detailed their conversation, highlighting that Assam is grappling with a second wave of floods this year due to heavy rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh and parts of upper Assam. He briefed the PM on the State Government’s ongoing relief efforts. PM Modi assured him of comprehensive assistance from the Central Government.
The flood crisis in Assam has intensified, with five major rivers, including the Brahmaputra, surpassing danger levels. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also contacted CM Himanta to discuss the worst-hit areas, such as Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, urging him to provide all necessary aid to affected residents.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), over 262,000 people have been impacted, and 44 lives have been lost due to floods, storms, and landslides this year. Rescue operations continue across 671 villages and 36 revenue circles with assistance from NDRF, SDRF, and local authorities.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several Northeastern States, predicting extremely heavy rainfall over the next two days in regions including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Meghalaya.
