Namchi district in Sikkim has been recognised as the top-performing district for milk production, announced during the 4th Gwala Diwas organised by the Sikkim Milk Union on July 1.
The prestigious Gwala Ratna Award 2023-24 was presented to Jeewan Prashad Sharma of Upper Linzey, Pakyong, during the event, which celebrated the union’s journey since its establishment in 1980.
A significant highlight of the event was the revival of the Dentam Cheese Plant, formerly managed by Amul, aimed at boosting local cheese production. The union also unveiled the innovative Gwala app, designed to modernise dairy operations by providing essential resources and facilitating efficient milk collection.
Despite challenges such as the lumpy disease outbreak affecting milk production in 2023, T B Ghatani, Managing Director of the Sikkim Milk Union, expressed optimism in overcoming obstacles and achieving higher production levels in the future.
From its inception with 51 dairy cooperative societies and 2,000 members, the union has expanded to operate 512 societies, processing an average of 52,544 litres of milk daily.
