Tripura’s Khowai District has been lauded as the Best Performing District by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights or NCPCR for its outstanding implementation of the Joint Action Plan on “Prevention of Drugs and Substance Abuse among Children and Illicit Trafficking.” The district received this accolade during the observance of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 30.
During the ceremony, Minister of State for Home Department, Nityananda Rai, presented the honour to District Magistrate Chandni Chandran. Khowai achieved high marks across various parametres of the program, including the installation of CCTV cameras in major medical shops, prabhari club activities in schools, and effective enforcement of the COTPA Act.
Highlighting their proactive measures, government sources noted, “In November 2023, Chief Minister Manik Saha launched the innovative CHESTA scheme to prevent child marriage and reintegrate victims back into schools. This initiative, encompassing school-going and out-of-school girls, garnered praise for its comprehensive approach involving all stakeholders and incentives for informants. The scheme played a crucial role in addressing child marriage, a major form of human trafficking in Tripura. Additionally, the Police Department reported a doubling in seizures of drugs and other intoxicants over the past year.”
