Assam’s Kaziranga National Park is facing a severe flooding crisis, with 95 out of 233 forest camps inundated by floodwaters. This alarming situation has prompted the evacuation of six camps to ensure the safety of personnel.
The flooding, exacerbated by heavy rains in Arunachal Pradesh and upper Assam districts, also resulted in the destruction of a wooden bridge near the Moshguli Camp in the Agratoli Range on July 1.
In response, herds of elephants have begun migrating towards Karbi Anglong through the Hati Dandi corridor, necessitating heavy traffic diversions on the NH 715 stretch in Nagaon and Golaghat districts. To manage the crisis, Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been enforced.
Authorities have enacted multiple precautionary measures, including standby rescue teams, veterinary units, boats, barricades, and essential supplies. Operational animal sensors and joint patrols by commando groups and forest teams are ongoing. A flood gauge station, supported by the Central Water Commission, is providing real-time flood level monitoring.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured full support to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in managing this flood crisis. Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, PM Modi pledged assistance following a discussion with CM Himanta on the relief measures undertaken by the State Government.
