To combat the illegal immigration issue and address demographic imbalances in Manipur, various groups have come forward to press for swift implementation of the National Register of Citizens-NRC in the State, using 1951 as the base year.
For the same, a delegation led by Coordinating Committee for Manipur Integrity or COCOMI Coordinator Thokchom Somorendro and the United Naga Council-UNC president NG Lorho met with Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan in Imphal. They submitted a pact advocating for the implementation of NRC.
The issue of illegal immigration and demographic imbalances have been posing significant uncertainties and political insecurities for the native population of Manipur.
The delegation stressed the importance of implementing the NRC as soon as possible to apply scientific methods for identifying illegal immigrants and to prevent further infiltration into the State. They called for an end to random village recognition without verification and highlighted the need to investigate and correct the abnormal increase in villages in certain districts.
Governor Uikey assured the representatives that steps would be taken to implement the NRC in Manipur. She mentioned that the matter has been discussed with the President of India, the Finance Minister, and the Union Home Minister, and assured that the Central Government is aware of the situation. The Governor affirmed that all necessary actions will be taken in the best interest of the people of Manipur.
