In a strategic move paving the way for Hemant Soren’s return as Jharkhand Chief Minister, his close associate, Champai Soren, has stepped down from the position just five months after assuming office. Champai Soren, considered a key figure in the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), took oath on February 2 amid political developments following Hemant Soren’s temporary absence due to legal proceedings.
After tendering his resignation to Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan on Wednesday, Champai Soren expressed his acceptance of the coalition’s decision. “When the leadership changed, I took responsibility. After Hemant Soren’s return, we collectively chose him as our leader, and I have resigned accordingly,” Champai Soren stated in Hindi, addressing reporters alongside Hemant Soren.
Regarding the timeline for his oath-taking ceremony, Hemant Soren indicated that further details would be disclosed later.
The State, governed by a coalition comprising the JMM, Congress, RJD, and CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, witnessed Hemant Soren’s re-election as the legislature party leader earlier in the day. This move came amidst speculation that Champai Soren might continue as CM until after the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections, scheduled later this year, contingent on the coalition’s electoral success.
Reports indicated Champai Soren’s potential role as JMM’s Executive President, despite earlier sentiments of feeling slighted over being asked to step down from the chief ministerial role.
The decision for Hemant Soren’s reinstatement was finalised during discussions at Champai Soren’s residence, attended by key leaders including Congress’ Jharkhand in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir, State president Rajesh Thakur, and Hemant Soren’s spouse and MLA Kalpana Soren.
Sources emphasised the strategic alignment to project Hemant Soren as the face of the coalition in the upcoming elections, highlighting JMM’s strength with 27 MLAs in the 81-member Assembly, backed by Congress (18), RJD (1), and CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation (1).
Meanwhile, the BJP, with 24 MLAs, continued its critique of Hemant Soren, reiterating accusations of dynastic politics within his family.
