Severe floods have wreaked havoc in Manipur, claiming two lives as major rivers breached embankments, forcing the evacuation of over 2,000 residents. The State Government, in response to the escalating flood situation, has declared school closures on Thursday.
Officials reported that the River Imphal breached its embankment at Singjamei Oinam Thingel in Imphal West, while the River Kongba overflowed at Kongba Irong and parts of Keirao in Imphal East. These breaches have inundated localities, including Singjamei, Langthabal, Kshetrigao, and Wangkhei Assembly constituencies, displacing residents and disrupting normal life.
Rescue operations led by the National Disaster Response Force or NDRF, Indian Red Cross Society, Loktak Development Authority, Assam Rifles, and State police have been ongoing to assist affected communities. A 24×7 control room has been established by the Manipur Government to coordinate relief efforts and support those impacted by the floods, incessant rains, and landslides.
The situation remains critical as authorities continue efforts to mitigate the aftermath of the floods and provide essential aid to affected residents.
