A team of eight Punjab Police officers arrived in Assam’s Dibrugarh district to facilitate the transportation of ‘Waris Punjab De’ activist Amritpal Singh to New Delhi for his Lok Sabha oath-taking ceremony.
Singh, recently elected from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency in Punjab, has been granted a four-day parole specifically for this purpose.
Led by a Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), the team is overseeing Singh’s transfer to New Delhi via a special flight with stringent security measures. Singh, currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) in Dibrugarh Central Jail, will return to custody immediately after the ceremony on Friday, as per senior Punjab Police officials.
Amritsar district magistrate Ghanshyam Thori issued orders to the Dibrugarh jail superintendent, stipulating, “This temporary release is for a period of up to four days or less to enable him (Amritpal) to take oath as a member of the Lok Sabha in New Delhi.”
The release of the Waris Punjab De leader, detained along with nine others under NSA, is subject to stringent conditions. “He shall be accompanied by police personnel as deemed necessary by the senior superintendent of police, Amritsar (rural), from the moment of his release until he resumes his detention at Central Jail, Dibrugarh,” the order specified on Wednesday.
