Following Team India’s jubilant T20 World Cup victory parade at Mumbai’s Marine Drive, chaos ensued as crowds surged, leaving a trail of scattered shoes, damaged cars, and a broken pole. The celebratory atmosphere turned hectic as fans, clad in blue jerseys, thronged the iconic promenade to cheer the returning champions.
Amidst chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’, the streets became packed, causing inconveniences and mishaps. Reports emerged of a woman fainting due to suffocation, prompting swift action from police to ensure safety amidst the overwhelming crowd.
Witnesses described scenes of fans dancing on car roofs in joyous celebration, inadvertently causing damage to parked vehicles. Several cars around Marine Drive were left with dented roofs, while a broken pole highlighted the fervour of spectators during Rohit Sharma’s team’s open-top bus parade.
Arvind, among the many attendees, recounted losing belongings in the commotion. “I lost one slipper, headphones, and my water bottle,” he shared, reflecting the chaotic atmosphere. “Some lost their mobile phones, and women lost handbags.”
The parade led to major traffic jams in South Mumbai, with police redirecting vehicular movement away from Marine Drive to alleviate congestion.
Following the procession, Team India was honoured at Wankhede Stadium, where the Board of Control for Cricket in India or BCCI presented a ₹125 crore check in recognition of their historic achievement. The T20 World Cup final on June 29 saw India claim their second title, ending a 13-year drought and securing their status as the first unbeaten team to win the T20 World Cup.
