Riyan Parag achieved a significant milestone in the first T20I between India and Zimbabwe on July 6, becoming the first male cricketer from Assam to represent the Indian senior cricket team internationally. Despite Assam having an international stadium, Riyan’s breakthrough marked a historic moment for the State.
His cricketing journey began with the U-19 World Cup victory in 2018, followed by his induction into the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, where he has become a pivotal player. Despite facing criticism, particularly on social media, Riyan has remained resilient, supported by his parents who shielded him from negativity online.
Fueled by a relentless drive to improve, Riyan shone in the domestic circuit last season, topping the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 and Deodhar Trophy with impressive performances both with bat and ball. His standout performances continued in the Ranji Trophy, underscoring his all-round capabilities.
In the IPL 2024 season, Riyan’s exceptional batting prowess earned him the prestigious Orange Cap briefly, finishing as the top scorer for Rajasthan Royals and among the highest overall. This season has been his best yet, amassing 573 runs at a formidable strike rate.
Meanwhile, alongside Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel and Abhishek Sharma also made their India debut in the T20I against Zimbabwe, with Shubman Gill leading India’s playing XI in the series opener.
