During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ongoing Moscow visit, Russia has agreed to discharge all Indian nationals serving in the Russian Army, following the Indian Premiere’s intervention with President Vladimir Putin. This decision comes after concerns were raised about Indians being coerced into combat roles amidst Russia’s conflict with Ukraine.
PM Modi raised the issue during a private dinner hosted by President Putin, where discussions also touched upon Bharat’s economic progress and PM Modi’s recent re-election for a third term.
The situation arose when nearly two dozen Indians, reportedly deceived by agents promising lucrative jobs, found themselves in military roles in Ukraine. A viral video earlier this year highlighted their plight, prompting strong actions from Indian authorities against those responsible for their recruitment under false pretenses.
Indian probe agencies have conducted raids and dismantled networks involved in trafficking Indians to Russia. While investigations continue into the circumstances of their deployment, efforts are underway to ensure the safe return of affected individuals.
PM Modi’s visit to Moscow marks a delicate balancing act between maintaining Bharat’s historical ties with Russia and expanding security relationships with Western nations. His discussions with President Putin today will further strengthen bilateral relations, culminating in the 22nd Bharat-Russia summit.
