In the flood-ravaged char regions of Dhubri district, the South Salmara Block Primary Health Centre or BPHC has demonstrated exceptional dedication by operating floating clinics to ensure essential healthcare reaches isolated communities. Under the guidance of the District Health Society Dhubri, these medical boat relief camps are pivotal in mitigating the impacts of the floods.
The char regions, known for their unique geographical challenges, bear the brunt of severe flooding. Despite obstacles such as boat breakdowns, storms, and heatwaves, the South Salmara BPHC’s efforts have been relentless.
Over the past five days, they have organised more than 21 medical boat aids, delivering crucial healthcare services to remote areas. Mostafizur Rahman, BPM of South Salmara BPHC, highlighted that out of 326 staff members, 106 were dedicated solely to providing medical assistance in these camps.
Teams composed of doctors, auxiliary nursing midwives (ANMs), chemists, vaccinators, multipurpose workers (MPWs), ASHAs, community health officers, laboratory technicians, and surveillance workers visited several relief camps using three to four medical relief boats. Their presence has been indispensable in offering medical care, supplies, and support to those affected by the floods.
The Brahmaputra River’s vastness and the immense water volume during floods pose significant challenges for relief efforts. Navigating these waters safely is difficult, often causing boats to get stuck, which complicates medical relief operations.
Despite these difficulties, the dedication of the healthcare teams is unwavering. They provide critical services, often attracting large numbers of people seeking medical attention, much like bees swarming around a hive.
The ongoing commitment of these healthcare teams is crucial in maintaining control and preventing the escalation of the crisis. More medical boat relief camps are planned to ensure continuous support and to manage the flood’s impact effectively.
Rahman asserted that their proactive approach aims to safeguard the well-being of the communities, ensuring that essential healthcare is consistently available to those in need.
In the face of adversity, the floating clinics in Dhubri set a commendable example of perseverance and service, highlighting the importance of accessible healthcare in disaster-prone areas.
