In an effort to enhance administrative efficiency and streamline State operations, the Meghalaya Cabinet, under Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, has resolved to dissolve the Meghalaya State Housing Board.
During a productive Cabinet meeting, the decision was made to offer a voluntary retirement scheme-VRS to the 18 employees currently working for the board.
Attendees of the meeting included Deputy Chief Minister Sniaw Bhadhar, Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma, and Minister of PHE, Soil and Water, and Housing Marcuise Marak. They reviewed and approved critical issues such as amendments to the Meghalaya GST Rules and a one-time settlement for petrol pumps to clear Rs 38 crore in tax arrears.
The dissolution of the board, initially established to oversee housing development in the State, is part of a larger strategy to rationalise State functions.
The VRS package aims to offer a dignified exit for the employees, ensuring they receive substantial financial support during their transition. Details about the VRS will be communicated to the employees in due time, ensuring transparency and fairness throughout the process.
Minister Marcuise Marak, who oversees the department, explained, “The decision to dissolve the Meghalaya State Housing Board was made after careful consideration of its current relevance and operational efficiency. We believe this move will allow us to reallocate resources more effectively and focus on more pressing developmental needs.”
The Cabinet deliberated on the broader implications of this decision, including potential impacts on ongoing and future housing projects. Measures will be implemented to ensure existing projects are either completed or smoothly transitioned to other departments or agencies.
This action is part of a series of reforms aimed at improving governance and service delivery in Meghalaya. Other notable decisions from the Cabinet meeting included finalising land rates for the New Shillong Township, streamlining SOPs and promotion timelines in the Personnel department, and amendments to Rule 7 of the Meghalaya Right to Public Service Act.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved the Meghalaya Public Communication Policy 2024, which seeks to enhance transparency and communication between the government and the public.
The dissolution of the Meghalaya State Housing Board signifies a major step in optimising the State’s administrative framework, ensuring that resources are effectively utilised to meet the needs of its citizens.
