Meghalaya has proudly introduced its own Over-The-Top (OTT) platform, marking it as the second Indian State to follow Kerala’s lead in this initiative. ‘Hello Meghalaya’ aims to strengthen local content creators and musicians, becoming a pivotal avenue for showcasing their creative endeavours.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma applauded the platform as a pioneering step, providing filmmakers, content creators, and musicians with a dedicated space to exhibit their work. The State Government is offering substantial financial incentives to stimulate participation and enhance the quality of content production.
Under the initiative, filmmakers can receive up to Rs 5 lakh per film, with additional funding possibilities for projects achieving national or international acclaim. Content creators have the opportunity to earn Rs 18,000 monthly for maximum uploads, with potential earnings scaling based on viewership. The platform also supports short video and short film producers.
Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh underlined the success of the Meghalaya Grassroots Music Project (MGMP), highlighting that 3,000 musicians now derive income through music. An official partnership with Hard Rock Cafe was also announced, facilitating Meghalayan artists’ performances at venues nationwide.
In addition to streaming local events like state football league matches, music festivals, and MGMP performances, the government plans to expand the platform’s offerings. This initiative aims to democratize access to local content and events for all Meghalaya residents.
Chief Secretary Donald P Wahlang asserted ‘Hello Meghalaya’ transcends being merely a digital platform; it celebrates the State’s cultural richness. The initiative is expected to generate job opportunities and promote local languages, potentially aiding their inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
To inaugurate the platform, a contest for content creators was organised across 14 diverse categories. Winners were selected by a jury comprising esteemed local personalities and through public polling. Categories ranged from social change influencers to outstanding podcasters, showcasing Meghalaya’s diverse talent pool.
As the platform gains traction, the State Government is exploring additional supportive measures. These include potential tax considerations to lower movie ticket prices and plans for establishing theatres in various districts for screening local content.
With ‘Hello Meghalaya’, the State envisions creating a sustainable ecosystem for artists while globally spotlighting and preserving its vibrant cultural heritage.
